No stay at The Captain’s House is complete without a boat trip along our rugged coastline. Perched above the crashing waves are nestling colonies of gulls, razorbills and guillemots. A visit to the mysterious Lundy Island, once a pirates' kingdom witnessing many a dastardly deed, is a must.

Did you know...  The Walk Before You Die!

A famous footpath which passes in front of The Captain’s House in Lynmouth is the “South West Coastal Path National Trail”. One of the top recommended ones printed in the best selling traveller’s book Unforgettable Walks Before You Die by Clare Jones and Steve Watkins. It ranks alongside climbing up Mount Kilimanjaro, a walk in Yellowstone National Park and Macchu Pichu to the hiking trail in Peru! Authors quote; “The North Devon stretch which takes you over Exmoor (Lynmouth) is probably our favourite.” So whilst staying here at The Captain’s House get walking and judge for yourself, truly unforgettable,
“Out of this world” Elsie Pearce.
Within walking distance is
Hollow Brook, a waterfall which is among the highest waterfalls in Britain. It drops 400 metres - dwarfing Niagara Falls by some
345 metres!

Don’t forget Glastonbury and a climb up the Tor, take in the healing waters of the magical spring at the Chalice Well; allegedly the last resting place of the Holy Grail. Also visit the grave in Glastonbury Abbey ruins of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. Near by is Wookey Hole and Cheddar Caves and Gorge geological marvels.

Visit Bristol and see Isambard Kingdom Brunell’s amazing Clifton Suspension Bridge, and no visit would be complete without going to the docks to see the world’s first metal ship the SS Great Britain (now open to the public fully restored). Then on to the Slave Museum or maybe visit the prehistoric, mystical sites of Stone Henge, Avebury and its stone circles.

For shock treatment see the 55 metre figure of a full frontal giant weilding his enormous cudgel carved into the chalk hillside of Cerne Abbas. (Believed to be the Roman God Hercules or an Iron Age warrior - you decide). Definately a topic of conversation at your next dinner party!
You wouldn’t believe it, but it’s true! Our sedate Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway is one of the “top 10 most dangerous railways in the world”!
Ever popular website “Splog” called “Most interesting facts” puts it at number 5 in its top ten alongside the Chennai Rames Waram route in India (which runs through the centre of a dangerous whirlwind) and Minami route in Japan (built frighteningly close to a  highly active volcano!) So now, not only can you do a top ten walk before you die, but you can take a nail-biting thrilling ride on the 5th most dangerous railway in the world whilst staying here with us in Lynmouth.
